Manchester United have initiated discussions regarding a potential transfer for Brentford striker Igor Thiago as they prepare to sell Joshua Zirkzee this summer. Zirkzee, who joined the Red Devils two years ago from Bologna in a £36.5 million deal, has scored only nine goals in 75 appearances, prompting clubs in Italy to express interest in bringing him back to Serie A.
Juventus are reportedly the frontrunners in the pursuit of Zirkzee, seeking a season-long loan with an option to make the move permanent next summer. United, however, prefer a permanent sale, but would need to replace Zirkzee before the end of the summer transfer window.
Transfer journalist Ben Thiago is a name under consideration to replace Zirkzee, having impressed last season with 22 goals in 38 league appearances. His blistering form earned him a call-up to the World Cup squad.
United have made enquiries about Igor Thiago's situation, despite his signing a new contract with Brentford in February that expires in 2031. "Igor Thiago has been discussed as somebody who's Premier League ready," a source said. "Nothing more than that at this stage, more of an internal conversation and a normal player call to understand his situation."
Getting Thiago out this summer will be incredibly difficult, according to a source. United have also been linked with Dusan Vlahovic, who left Juventus on a free transfer last season. They are also keeping tabs on Ollie Watkins' situation at Aston Villa.
The Red Devils have already bolstered their midfield with the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. They have also signed Karl Darlow from Leeds United as a back-up for Senne Lammens. United are still keen to add another central midfielder, with Carlos Baleba and Manu Kone under consideration.
Additionally, United may look to table a bid for Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall, who is reportedly keen to switch St James' Park for Old Trafford this summer.
