The Senate Judiciary Committee postponed its scheduled vote on the nomination of Todd Blanche for Attorney General.
The vote, originally set for Thursday morning, was delayed by Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley after Senators John Cornyn and John Tillis raised concerns about the Department of Justice’s language regarding a settlement with the Internal Revenue Service.
Grassley said the postponement is intended to secure sufficient committee support for Blanche, describing him as highly qualified for the position.
Cornyn and Tillis have requested written assurances that the DOJ will abandon a proposed $1.8 billion fund intended for alleged weaponization of government resources and that the terms of the IRS settlement will be clarified.
The senators indicated that Blanche’s testimony did not satisfy their demands and that a formal commitment is required before they can endorse the nomination.
On Wednesday evening, the DOJ submitted a revised response addressing the concerns raised by Cornyn and Tillis, aiming to move the nomination forward.
The committee’s next steps remain uncertain as officials work to resolve the outstanding issues and schedule a new markup vote.
