Guthrie kidnapping suspects identified by sheriff

The Pima County Sheriff said two individuals previously questioned in the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie remain persons of interest and that investigators are still working to solve the case as the six-month anniversary approaches.

Sheriff Chris Nanos told local television station ABC15 that the absence of arrests or formal charges does not mean those questioned have been cleared. He emphasized that continued investigation means there is insufficient evidence to detain them further, not that they are no longer under suspicion.

Earlier statements from the sheriff's office had suggested that two men detained for questioning in February, along with three others involved in a police raid, were no longer considered suspects. However, Nanos clarified that this interpretation was inaccurate.

One of the men, identified as delivery driver Carlos Palazuelos, was questioned on February 10. He previously told ABC15 that he feared for his safety during the encounter, believing he was being kidnapped himself. Palazuelos maintained his innocence, stating he may have delivered a package but never participated in any kidnapping.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, disappeared on February 1 from her Tucson home, prompting an intensive search and investigation. Her daughter, television personality Savannah Guthrie, has made multiple public appeals for her mother's safe return, including a recent video message asking the perpetrators to "do the right thing."

In the emotional plea, Guthrie described the family's ongoing anguish, saying they are "in agony" and living in a "nightmare that will not end." She directly addressed the kidnappers, urging them to release her mother and emphasizing that the family has done everything possible to find her.

Sheriff Nanos indicated that investigators continue to process substantial evidence, including DNA samples and video footage. He expressed confidence that the case will eventually be resolved, noting the volume of material still under review.

A former CIA employee suggested that Guthrie's latest public statement may indicate new developments, potentially involving a ransom demand. The analyst noted that Guthrie appears to be responding to specific questions, including references to financial negotiations.

The investigation into Nancy Guthrie's disappearance remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to follow leads and analyze evidence collected over the past six months.
