President Trump is set to announce the “Freedom Haulers” initiative, a program aimed at expanding commercial driver opportunities for military veterans while tightening enforcement against illegal and unqualified truck drivers.
The initiative, unveiled at the White House, will allow veteran truckers to obtain commercial driver’s licenses more quickly by extending the post‑service waiver period from twelve to twenty‑four months.
During the event, Trump will be joined by Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins, and acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling to welcome a truck on West Executive Avenue and outline the program’s goals.
Werner Enterprises, a major trucking firm, is expected to announce plans to hire 1,400 veteran drivers as part of the effort to strengthen the industry.
The administration also emphasized its ongoing crackdown on commercial drivers who lack English‑language proficiency or proper licensing, citing safety and regulatory compliance concerns.
A White House spokesperson highlighted that the Freedom Haulers initiative makes it easier for veterans to transition to civilian careers while improving road safety by removing unqualified drivers from the highway system.
The program represents a coordinated effort across Transportation, Labor, Veterans Affairs, and other agencies to support supply chains and provide quality employment for former service members.
