Eight lanes at Security Checkpoint 2 are equipped with the e‑gates, and access is limited to TSA PreCheck members, who use the same queue as other passengers without a separate line.
Upon reaching the booth, travelers can insert a Real ID‑compliant driver’s license, scan a passport, or tap a mobile ID, after which a mounted camera records their image for comparison with the ID photo.
If the system confirms a match, a screen displays clearance and the gates swing open, a process that typically takes only a few seconds.
Following ID verification, passengers proceed with standard screening: placing carry‑on items on a conveyor belt and passing through the body scanner.
A Touchless ID option allows users to verify identity solely with facial recognition, eliminating the need to present a physical document before the gates open.
The TSA reports that the e‑gate process saves roughly three seconds per passenger, an efficiency gain that can accumulate significantly across thousands of daily travelers.
Beyond speed, the automation is intended to free security officers for other duties, such as assisting occasional flyers navigating conventional lanes.
