Funeral boss gave family animal ashes

Funeral boss gave family animal ashes

The court in Hull heard a disturbing case involving former funeral director Robert Bush, who faces up to 25 years in prison over allegations of mishandling deceased remains and fraud.

During the trial, a forensic expert described one set of remains as the ashes of an adult, while another resembled animal remains, eliciting gasps from the gallery.

A report by a forensic scientist and ex‑funeral director found the Hessle Road mortuary in a lamentable state, with ashes stored chaotically on shelves and floors, mould growing in damp boxes, and ashes discovered on desks and scattered across a room.

Prosecutors highlighted that Bush failed to return mandatory burial and cremation forms, and the assigned registrar did not follow up on these omissions, prompting the judge to question why regulatory procedures were ignored.

The judge noted that while the funeral industry lacks a unified national regulation, a system existed that Bush did not comply with, and asked for a clear explanation of this failure.

Financial records revealed that between 2017 and 2024, Bush spent more than £42,000 on holidays, £21,000 on motorcycle racing, and £17,400 on home improvements while defrauding customers and providing incorrect ashes to grieving families.

Details of his spending included £6,400 on Center Parcs trips, £3,800 to Italy, and £3,000 on a vacation to Arizona, along with nearly £10,000 in retail and restaurant expenses, including a £250 meal at a fashionable venue.

Bank statements showed that almost £1.49 million was transferred into Bush’s personal account from the funeral business, with total receipts exceeding £3 million, yet these figures were not reflected in official company filings.

Police discovered 35 bodies and more than 100 sets of ashes at the Hessle Road location in March 2024, after which Bush pleaded guilty to 30 counts of preventing lawful burial, theft from charities, fraud over ashes for 57 people, and fraudulent trading related to funeral plans.
