Police responded to an alleged firearm discharge outside the York Mosque and Islamic Centre in the early hours of the morning, prompting a swift investigation.
Officers have begun patrolling the surrounding area while congregants attend prayers, and they will meet with the mosque’s imam to coordinate safety measures. Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, possesses CCTV footage, or captured dash‑cam video to come forward.
A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the reported discharge, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The mosque was temporarily closed as a precaution while authorities conduct their enquiries. Its president, Mohamad Douba, confirmed that no one was harmed during the incident.
Douba expressed gratitude to a community member who observed suspicious activity and reported what sounded like gunfire, prompting an immediate police response. He emphasized that the safety of congregants, staff, volunteers, and students remains the top priority.
Officials asked the public to refrain from speculation and to contact police with any information that could aid the investigation.
