With this new feature, users can prompt the AI to generate images based on the existing landscape in Google Earth. For instance, a text prompt such as "reimagine this empty lot in Tokyo as a vibrant shopping and retail district with open spaces" can transform a bare part of the 3D map into a vibrant and dynamic scene.
Google has provided five suggestions for how users might deploy these capabilities in Google Earth. One idea is to learn while exploring, by using the AI to build an infographic on a historical landmark, such as the Statue of Liberty. Users can also visualize personal projects, such as a dream lakeside home or an extension for their current property.
Moreover, users can explore the past and future. Google suggests imagining how a place might look in a hundred years, or diving back into the past to recreate a historical scene. The company showcased a demo with the prompt "render a hyper-realistic view of what these Pompeii ruins looked like in 78 AD," which could be used by teachers to bring history to life.
However, it's essential to note that these new features come with the usual caveats of AI image generation. While Nano Banana 2 can pull real-world information and images from the web, and render graphics with more consistency and accuracy than previous models, there may still be weaknesses in the final images produced. Users should be aware of these limitations when using the feature.
Google's representative emphasized the real-world knowledge base that Nano Banana 2 draws on, which includes all the text and graphics it can find online, as well as the vast number of images that have been plugged into the AI during its training. With Google Earth, the AI will also trace over the structure ruins that are still in place when it comes to historical sites like Pompeii.
