A suitcase discovered near the scene did not belong to Ross, who had no large luggage, indicating it may contain evidence such as DNA or fingerprints.
A homeless man found the body after following a strong odor into an abandoned building, where he also noticed something protruding from the suitcase that resembled a human limb.
Ross had flown to Greece from the United States on June 29 and was staying with friends in Athens.
Police estimate the murder occurred on July 15, though the exact circumstances remain unclear.
Her father has been notified as authorities work to reconstruct her final movements and identify those she was with.
Officials from the Scottish police force confirmed they were aware of the death and were coordinating with Greek authorities.
