Music legend John "Cougar" Mellencamp was met with swift criticism from the White House after he mocked President Trump's decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America during a performance in New Jersey.
Mellencamp, known for his liberal views, made the comment while performing one of his most famous songs, "Pink Houses," on Saturday night as part of his Dancing Words Tour – The Greatest Hits.
While singing about the Gulf of Mexico, Mellencamp suddenly inserted a joke, saying, "Is that right? It's not the Gulf of America? What a stupid fking idea." The comment sparked a backlash, with the White House promptly responding.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle issued a statement saying, "Nobody in their right mind cares what out-of-touch, woke Hollywood celebrities have to say." The statement effectively shut down Mellencamp's attempt to comment on the President's decision.
The controversy surrounding the Gulf of America name change began in January 2025, when then-President-elect Trump announced his plan to rename the Gulf of Mexico during a press conference.
Trump claimed the name change was necessary, saying, "The Gulf of America has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory. It's appropriate. It's appropriate." However, the move was met with widespread criticism, with Mexico threatening to sue the United States over the decision.
The Associated Press also defied the executive order, prompting Trump to block the outlet from the White House.
